But what are the exact responsibilities of the process owner? A recent study by Danilova (2019) addressed this topic by conducting a systematic literature review including 100 academic papers and 10 books on business process management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>As a result, the paper divides the process owner\u2019s responsibilities into five categories: planning and organizing, process performance management, process improvement and innovation, team leadership, and stakeholder management and advocacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Planning and organizing:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Design the process<\/li><li>Define subprocesses and process boundaries (process map)<\/li><li>Ensure standardization and documentation of processes<\/li><li>Advocate compliance with the process<\/li><li>Approve variations when necessary<\/li><li>Provide guidance as to handling exceptions and errors<\/li><li>Coordinate activities<\/li><li>Ensure alignment with strategy and execute strategies<\/li><li>Influence resource allocation<\/li><li>Ensure process compliance with external obligations<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Process performance management:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Define objectives<\/li><li>Define performance indicators<\/li><li>Monitor and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/?p=224\">manage process performance<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Process improvement and innovation:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Follow the competitive environment, technological progress and changing customer requirements<\/li><li>Detect and evaluate needs and opportunities for incremental process improvement and innovation<\/li><li>Receive change suggestions from the organization<\/li><li>Check for possible suboptimization<\/li><li>Initiate process change<\/li><li>Coordinate and lead change project<\/li><li>Promote the process design<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Team leadership:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Lead a process team<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Stakeholder management and advocacy:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Create process awareness<\/li><li>Represent and promote the process<\/li><li>Communicate with stakeholders<\/li><li>Maintain and promote a strong customer focus<\/li><li>Collaborate with other process owners<\/li><li>Collaborate with functional managers<\/li><li>Maintain contact with suppliers<\/li><li>Promote and facilitate teamwork in the organization<\/li><li>Secure feeling of ownership among process employees<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The full paper can be found here: Danilova, K.B.
