This article discusses the concept of process performance measurement of the <a title=\"Survey on business process management\" href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/?p=358\">process management survey<\/a>. Details on the survey (research design, sample, etc.) can be found <a title=\"Survey on business process management\" href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/?p=358\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Implementing measures and taking corrective actions are operating precepts of process management (Melan, 1989). The results of the survey show that the concept of process performance measurement is partly established by organizations (see figures below). More than 40% of the surveyed firms state that process performance measurement is not implemented in the firm.<\/p>\n<p>The item <em>\u201cPerformance indicators are specified for our organization\u2019s business processes\u201d<\/em> was rated by the firms in the sample as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>42,67%: Disagree<\/li>\n<li>27,33%: Neither agree nor disagree<\/li>\n<li>30,00%: Agree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_441\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PPM_DEF.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-441\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-441 \" title=\"Process performance indicators\" src=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PPM_DEF.png\" alt=\"Performance indicators are specified for our organization\u2019s business processes.\" width=\"460\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PPM_DEF.png 657w, http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PPM_DEF-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Performance indicators are specified for our organization\u2019s business processes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Process performance indicators have to be derived from the process objectives which themselves have to be derived from business objectives. The results of the survey reveal that most of the firms which defined process performance indicators derived these indicators from enterprise goals and\/or customer requirements. Most firms which defined process performance indicators also continuously collect performance data. Most firms which defined process performance indicators also initiate improvement actions if process performance is poor. Most organizations which defined process performance indicators also make the data available to process performers. The results of the survey reveal that process benchmarking is infrequently used by organizations. The item <em>\u201cProcess benchmarking (for several processes) is carried out in the organization\u201d<\/em> was rated by the firms in the sample as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>25,68%: No process performance indicators defined<\/li>\n<li>37,84%: Disagree<\/li>\n<li>29,73%: Neither agree nor disagree<\/li>\n<li>6,76%: Agree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_452\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/BENCHM.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-452\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-452 \" title=\"Process benchmarking\" src=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/BENCHM.png\" alt=\"Process benchmarking (for several processes) is carried out in the organization.\" width=\"460\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/BENCHM.png 657w, http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/BENCHM-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Process benchmarking (for several processes) is carried out in the organization.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Activity based costing captures costs horizontally in line with business processes (Hinterhuber, 1995). The results of the study reveal that activity based costing is rarely used by organizations.
