This article discusses the issue of the process owner role of the <a title=\"Survey on business process management\" href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/?p=358\">process management survey<\/a>. Details on the survey (research design, sample, etc.) can be found <a title=\"Survey on business process management\" href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/?p=358\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A business process needs to have a process owner having end to end responsibility of the process (Suter, 2009). The results of the survey show that the role of the process owner is established in most of the firms (see figures below). It is worth mentioning that 28% of the surveyed firms state that the role of the process owner does not exist.<\/p>\n<p>The item <em>\u201cThe role of the process owner is established in our organization and a process owner has been assigned to each business process\u201d<\/em> was rated by the firms in the sample as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>28%: Disagree<\/li>\n<li>16%: Neither agree nor disagree<\/li>\n<li>56%: Agree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PO_EX.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-409 \" title=\"Process owner\" src=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PO_EX.png\" alt=\"\"The role of the process owner is established in our organization and a process owner has been assigned to each business process.\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PO_EX.png 657w, http:\/\/www.processorientation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PO_EX-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>A process owner needs to have leadership experience (Schmelzer and Sesselmann, 2006). The results of the survey reveal that most of the firms which implemented the process owner role have assigned experienced leaders\/managers to this role. If process owners have influence over personnel assignments, they thereby also have more influence on the performance of the process.
